Backyard Birding

Mockingbirds

Birds are beautiful creatures and ethereal in nature as they soar above the earth. Birds evoke dreams of flight and fancy as we watch them fly, easily and carefree. Bird lovers everywhere rejoice when they see the brilliant plumage of their feathered friends. Whether you are a bird aficionado, or just an interested novice, the mockingbird generates fascination. Mockingbirds are persistent singers that are easily recognizable and popular.

There are several types of mockingbird, depending on region. Often referred to as the "American Nightingale" the Northern Mockingbird is common to suburbs and is known for its complex songs and bird imitations. Though the sex of many birds can be distinguished through plumage, these songbirds look alike. A mockingbird's song consists of several phrases repeated many times. It includes mimicry of many different types of birds. Songs are added throughout the life of the bird, and they generally sing all year long. Some consider it a sin to kill a mockingbird, as they do little but generate beautiful songs for all to enjoy. They also do nothing to make themselves a nuisance. Folklore has said that the mockingbird has the ability to hypnotize and mesmerize with the beauty of its voice.

Unlike many songbirds, the female mockingbird sings as well. However, she generally doesn't sing in the summer, and she is much quieter than the males. Interestingly, the female mockingbird generally only sings when the male is away, but sings in the fall to establish territory. Mockingbirds also mimic amphibians and insects, often loudly. There are 17 known species of Mockingbird, all elegant and fascinating.
