Gracefully soaring through the air on a wind current, making no noise, just trying to reach a destination, the butterfly is well on it’s way. The life of a butterfly begins as an egg, then it becomes a caterpillar, where it spends most of it’s time eating leaves and molting. It molts several times before it wraps itself in a pupa and rests. The day finally comes when it breaks out of the pupa and becomes a beautiful butterfly. This beautiful creature never makes a sound during the whole process, or at least not one that we can hear.
Butterflies are found all over the world and come in various sizes. Their wing span can range from four inches to less than one inch. They are small and do not contain much body heat, so they prefer the warmer climates. Some migrate short distances while others, like the monarchs, migrate thousands of miles. They depend on the wind to carry them most of the distance because their bodies are too fragile to travel long distances, and many die in the migration process.
If you have ever sat and watched the butterflies, you can feel the movement and the relaxation of these fragile insects. They fly from one flowering plant to another, sitting in the sunshine to feel the heat and sipping on the sweet nectar of the flower without a care in the world. When flying they let the wind take total control and go with the flow until it dies down or it begins to rain. Rain can damage the wings of a butterfly so it must take cover quickly, or it will die.
A butterflies' life is short and sweet and it tries hard to survive but watching its beautiful colored wings flowing in the wind current leaves a sense of relaxation and wonder in the viewer.
