These ceramic bird houses have been used since colonial times. They are put on a house like this, or under the eaves. They can be put on a tree or post. In colonial times and still today they are put close to attrace insect eating birds. This picture was taken in Williamsburg VA. As you can see these work, this one has 2 birds for sure in it. Maybe babies in the back. I don't know if they did or if they were just nesting there.
