Look at these bleeding hearts aren't they lovely? They look so pretty I think. The colors are really nice. There shape is quite different then so many flowers. Bleeding hearts are native to Japan. They are great shade plants for the perennial garden. They have a fern like leaf, and the flowers come on arching stems. Very beautiful. These can be put in part to full shade and can have average to medium wet soil that is well drained. Organically rich soil is good for them. Bleeding hearts have no real insect or disease problems. Bleeding hearts can last for years so to prevent over crowding they should be split apart every 3-4 years. You can do this in early spring but be gentle with the roots they are very fragile. So if you have a shade garden or a place with mostly shade, then this is one of the plants that you would be able to put there. It will add color to that spot. There are also a white variation of the bleeding heart. They are quite lovely as well. Mixed in with the pink bleeding hearts will make quite a statement. Or if you have an evening garden with plants that bloom around evening time, a lot of these can be a white color, so planting this in with them would be quite nice as well, with the white flowers and the green leaves. If you want to attract humming birds, bleeding hearts is one of the plants that hummingbirds will come to. The plants will also attract butterflies also. You can enjoy some relaxation by watching your garden and it's visitors.
