Backyard Birding

Cardinal

Here is a beautiful picture of a cardinal at the bird feeder. Looks like he was posing for me to take his picture. What a lovely bright red color these birds are with the black to highlight it even more. The female is a duller color but is so beautiful in her own right. Have you even listened to cardinals sing they have such a beautiful song. If your familiar with some different bird songs you can pick the cardinal out very easy. It has a distinctive sound to it. I'm focused in the the bird feeder here. But the branches you see coming toward the feeder is of the mountain ash tree, and the bush to the left of the feeder is a forsythia bush. Under the feeder is a small flower garden I can't see any flowers in this picture so I'm wondering if this was a spring picture. No matter what the season, the Cardinal is always welcome with there bright color and beautiful song. The cardinals like thickets and brush areas, clearings, parks, and residential areas. The cardinals feed on a number of foods including seeds, and fruit. There summer diet can be up to one-third of insects. There winter diet is ninety percent vegetable matter. . The northern cardinal are a medium sized songbird. There wings are short and rounded, with a long tail, there bill is conical and they have a crest. The young cardinals are the same color as females except they are more brown in color, they molt to there adult colors in the fall.

Very nice article about the cardinal. They do have a very distinctive sound and I now recognize their chirps whenever nearby. We always enjoy their visits to our backyard.
