Here is a dark purple clematis. In this picture though it doesn't look that dark of a purple. Let's just say it looks a lot darker to the eye then to the eye in the picture. It's a beautiful plant. You put it up on a trellis for it to grow upwards. In this picture the middle of the flower is all together open the picture at the bottom the middle part of the flower is not fully opened yet. The bottom picture is a fairly good picture I think look at the bee in the middle of the flower. If you look at this picture in it's larger size you can see the markings on the tail end of the bee. I'm not sure what type of a bee this is. I think it might be a yellow jacket, but I'm not sure. These types of vines are good for fences, trellises, porches and posts. They do require support to climb. They like evenly moist but well drained rich, but slightly alkaline soil. The flowers like sun but the roots prefer a cool shaded place. You can put annuals, perennials, or ground cover over the roots of this vine to keep cool but do no use mulch. The clematis vine comes in all colors and in all shades. The different varieties even have different bloom times of the year. The birds love to fly in this vine because it provides a safe cover for the small birds. It's a nice plant and only requires some pruning either every year or every other year depending on what kind you get.
